About This Course

By the end of this course, students will: B1. The Critical Analysis Process: use the critical analysis process when responding to, analysing, reflecting on, and interpreting music; B2. Music and Society: demonstrate an understanding of social and cultural influences on and effects of traditional, commercial, and art music; B3. Skills and Personal Growth: demonstrate an understanding of how performing, creating, and critically analysing music has affected their skills and personal development; B4. Connections Beyond the Classroom: analyse opportunities and requirements for continued engagement in music.

Learning Outcomes

Develop musical literacy through performance and the preparation of music productions; perform works appropriate to experience, and collaborate to plan, produce, present and market musical productions using creative and critical analysis processes.

Study a range of scales (major, minor, chromatic, blues and whole tone), intervals, triads, chords and cadences; analyse patterns, listen to and identify musical examples, and create examples using notation software.

Enhance composition skills through rhythmic and melodic dictation; broaden understanding of simple and compound time; explore music history from the Baroque and Classical periods and examine popular music; analyse melody, texture and composition.

Conduct structural analysis of music by comparing popular and Canadian music, exploring the variance between recorded and live performances and investigating musical forms.

Explore performance and career opportunities, including education pathways, safe and healthy practices, performance etiquette, ethical and legal issues such as copyright, and ensemble participation enabled by evolving technologies.

Respond to, reflect on and analyse music from various genres and periods; demonstrate understanding of social and cultural influences on music and the impact of performing, creating and analysing music on personal skills and growth.
