About This Course

Students develop basic listening and conversational skills in the Indigenous language, understand language structures and vocabulary, appreciate Native oral traditions, read simple texts, write on familiar topics using accurate language conventions and use information technology to communicate.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate listening skills in varied situations; converse on familiar and new topics in both structured and open-ended settings; communicate ideas and information for various purposes using new vocabulary and known expressions; understand language structures and vocabulary in different contexts; use various forms of communication to express Native philosophy and demonstrate understanding of oral traditions; use information technology to communicate.

Analyse information presented orally; summarise essential parts of narrations or discussions; distinguish linguistic, structural and conceptual contrasts (e.g., singular/plural, prefix/suffix, fact/opinion); demonstrate understanding of Native philosophy and the history of the language under study.

Use refined pronunciation and intonation; express ideas using expanded language structures; converse using simple, compound and some complex sentences; use a wide range of greetings; follow detailed oral descriptions and give precise descriptions; speak confidently in various situations; use a growing range of vocabulary; describe experiences in detail; participate in word games; portray characters in skits; conduct interviews with elders or relatives to construct family or community histories; retell Native legends, stories and community histories accurately.

Use information technology to produce and record short skits depicting Native events, prepare and present weather or news reports, make announcements in a Native language and communicate with other students.

Read passages on familiar and unfamiliar topics and infer the meaning of new words and language patterns; identify language patterns and vocabulary learned through oral work; read for a variety of purposes; demonstrate comprehension of diverse reading materials; understand the history of the language; use information technology to communicate.

Distinguish linguistic, structural and conceptual contrasts; identify main ideas and supporting details; compare ideas, characters, events and language conventions in texts; compare writing systems of different Native linguistic groups; interpret stories with multiple episodes; translate passages using dictionaries or word lists.
