About This Course

Students engage in the engineering design process and apply fundamental technological concepts to plan, design, perform, and refine projects; follow health and safety practices; and explore how technology develops and its impacts on society, environment and careers in the skilled trades.

Learning Outcomes

Investigate fundamental technological concepts and design considerations; apply STEM concepts and consider accessibility and user needs when initiating and planning projects; communicate design ideas using industry terminology; set evaluation criteria; explore project‑management skills; and collect information from diverse sources including Indigenous perspectives.

Use project management skills to develop processes for creating products or services; identify factors affecting success and apply strategies to improve outcomes; justify the selection of materials and resources considering sustainability; select and maintain tools and equipment; use industry‑related documents; create products or deliver services while documenting development; and perform accurate measurements using metric and imperial systems.

Identify challenges encountered during projects and apply critical‑thinking skills to address them; analyze the performance of products or services using appropriate criteria; propose refinements based on data; and communicate challenges, analyses and proposals to specific audiences using appropriate formats and terminology.

Describe health and safety regulations and the roles and responsibilities of participants; identify hazards and apply strategies to minimize risks; use tools and equipment safely; follow practices that support physical and mental well‑being; handle and dispose of materials and waste products properly; and make safety a priority at all times.

Investigate how user needs and social, economic and environmental factors drive technological evolution; analyze legal, ethical, social, economic and environmental influences on technology; recognize contributions of Canadians and diverse communities, including First Nations, Métis and Inuit, to technological innovation; and describe how diverse communities apply knowledge systems to technological problem solving.

Identify short‑ and long‑term impacts of technologies on individuals, society, the environment and the economy; explain local and global impacts of technological innovations, including effects on the labour market; and evaluate how positive and negative impacts influence technological evolution.
